The Blaydes Clinic was established by James Elliott Blaydes, Sr., in 1923 on Federal Street in “downtown” Bluefield, West Virginia. In the late 1920’s, The Bluefield Daily Telegraph headline proclaimed, “Dr. Blaydes Performs Miraculous Operation - Blind For Years, Two Men Recover Power of Vision.” In the early 1930’s, Dr. Blaydes, Sr, with the assistance of the WV Lions Club, donated his surgical services to restore the vision of nearly 30 children from the West Virginia School For the Blind.
Dr. Elliot Blaydes expanded this outreach while developing, performing, and teaching revolutionary surgical techniques which have been instrumental in developing many major ophthalmic advances throughout the world. His innovation and commitment to excellence earned The Blaydes Clinic an international reputation as a leader in vision care.
Dr. Stephen Blaydes joined the practice in 1994 and continues a three-generation, century-old commitment to excellence and humanitarian concerns. While The Blaydes Clinic is recognized internationally, our primary commitment is to our neighbors in West Virginia and southwest Virginia.
